As the mechanical engineer for Salinas
Valley Memorial Hospital’s Central Plant,
Axiom Engineers(sm) provided the detailed design
for a “guaranteed savings project”.
This project consisted of a new, stand-alone central
mechanical plant containing three 140-boiler horsepower
thermal fluid heaters with stack economizers,
feed water storage tanks, and two 200-horsepower
thermal fluid-to-water heat exchangers producing
high-pressure steam, which is routed underground
to the original boiler room for distribution throughout
the building. The building also contains a 350-ton
gas engine driven chiller, pumps, and cooling
tower. Chilled water is routed underground to
the existing chiller plant, which was converted
to a true primary/secondary system. The plant
was designed to operate automatically without
boiler attendants.
