Sited on the shores of scenic Monterey
Bay, this remodel and expansion created new technology,
wet, and dry research laboratories, support staff office
areas, and a 500,000 gallon seawater tank for underwater
remote-piloted vehicle development and testing. Variable
air volume HVAC was specially configured to maintain
humidity at acceptable levels and to maintain positive
ventilation and pressure control of the laboratories.
Salt-laden fresh air was pretreated, and 316-stainless
steel fresh-air ductwork was incorporated to ensure
equipment life in an aggressive environment. Seawater
circulation and treatment systems for the testing tank
had to capture and remove introduced fluids, such as
oil, prior to an environmentally sound discharge.
Axiom Engineers(sm) saved the project
over $200,000 by proving the existing chilled water
plant had adequate capacity with control revisions,
and a new plant was not required to support the project.
